- USRobotics COURIER 2400e
- With MNP Error Control
-
- The Courier 2400e from USRobotics is an enhanced version of
- the Courier 2400, with a number of new and powerful features.
- Like the Courier 2400, the 2400e is an auto-dial, auto-answer,
- asynchronous modem compatible with CCITT V.22bis at 2400bps, Bell
- 212A at 1200bps, and Bell 103 at 300bps. It uses a superset of
- the Courier command set and S-registers, and is compatible with
- virtually all popular software. The Courier 2400e is a
- standalone, which can be used with any RS232-serial-equipped
- computer or terminal.
-
-
- MNP Error Control.
-
- MNP is a public domain error- and flow- control protocol
- that is becoming the standard hardware based solution for
- providing error-free data communications for personal computers
- and data terminals.
-
- The Courier 2400e supports MNP service classes I, II, and
- III. When making a connection, the 2400e will negotiate the
- highest level of MNP supported by the remote modem. If it
- reaches a non-MNP modem, it will operate as a normal Courier
- 2400.
-
-
- Flow control.
-
- An on-board error control protocol requires that the modem
- control the flow of data between the modem and the terminal or
- computer, to prevent the possible loss of data that might
- otherwise occur.
-
- MNP provides error free data by retransmitting blocks of
- data which are not acknowledged as error free by the receiving
- modem. The Courier 2400e has a 4k buffer to store data blocks
- during retransmission. In the event of a high amount of
- retransmitted blocks (as on a very poor line), flow control
- allows the modem to signal the computer to stop sending data when
- its buffer is getting full.
-
- The Courier 2400e uses industry standard CTS/RTS handshaking
- for hardware flow control, and XON/XOFF characters for software
- flow control. These options are fully programmable, via the AT
- command set.
-
- There are some fringe benefits to using flow control, in
- addition to the MNP requirement. The computer to modem port
- speed can be set to a steady value up to 19,200bps, regardless of
- the modem to modem link speed.
-
- There are two distinct advantages of this arrangement. The
- user need not worry about changing speeds when the modems fall
- back to 1200 or 300bps. The flow control takes care of the speed
- difference.
-
- A second benefit is the potential for greater overall data
- throughput. MNP strips start and stop bits from the data stream,
- much as in synchronous transmission. The receiving modem
- reinserts the start and stop bits before passing on the data.
- This means that fewer bits are needed to send a character. The
- net effect of this, allowing for the error correcting overhead,
- is about 8% greater throughput, or 259 characters per second on a
- 2400bps connection. With the port speed set higher than the
- modem to modem speed, the user can take advantage of this
- efficiency.
-
-
- Non-volatile memory.
-
- The Courier 2400e is equipped with non-volatile memory
- (NRAM), which allows users to store optional power up/reset
- defaults, rather than reentering a series of commands every
- session.
-
- In addition, one phone number can be stored in NRAM, and
- auto dialed with the "ATDS" command.
-
-
- Other new features.
-
- Other features which have been implemented on the Courier
- 2400e include:
-
- - Extended command set.
- - New S-registers for added diagnostics and advanced options.
- - Additional front panel indicators to monitor CTS and RTS lines,
- as well as an ARQ light which indicates an error free connection
- and flashes during retransmission of bad blocks, providing a
- simple indicator of line quality.
-
- The features of the original Courier 2400 have all been
- maintained, and the help screens and status screens have been
- expanded to include the new 2400e features and commands.
